MANILA, Philippines—A woman was killed after she fell off a motorcycle and got run over by a bus shortly past midnight Tuesday in Quezon City.

Marife Espartero, 34, died of severe head injuries following the accident on Belfast Avenue, Barangay (village) Pasong Putik. Her companion who drove the bike, Mary Joy Socorro, 21, was also thrown off and suffered injuries in the leg and foot, according to Insp. Marlon Meman, Quezon City Police District Traffic Sector 2 commander.

The driver of the Mayamy bus, Felipe Estrada Jr., was held in police custody to face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and physical injuries. The two women were coming from Quirino Highway when Socorro lost control of the bike near Mary the Queen Parish Church.

Estrada, whose bus was running right behind the women, was unable to avoid the fallen Espartero, who was killed on the spot, Meman said. Socorro was brought to East Avenue Medical Center for treatment.—Julie M. Aurelio
