Today is the 103rd birth anniversary of National Artist Hernando R. Ocampo. Born in 1911 in Sta. Cruz, Manila, he was known as a painter whose works left an indelible mark on Philippine modern art. His masterpiece “Genesis” served as the basis for the curtain design of the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ main theater. Also a Tagalog fictionist, scriptwriter and journalist, he was National Media Production Center director from 1954 to 1958. He died on Dec. 28, 1978 and was posthumously named National Artist for Visual Arts in June 1991. Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
