LIPA CITY, Philippines – President Benigno Aquino III said Friday he was expecting more from his new Air Force chief since he knew him more than his predecessor.

But Aquino said during turnover rites here that this did not mean that Lieutenant General Lauro Catalino dela Cruz whom Major General Jeffrey Delgado succeeded did not have a good performance.

“That’s why Jeff, for the longest time, and you who I know so well—if Larry whom I didn’t know delivered a good performance, I think I expect you to double it,” Aquino said in jest during his speech in Filipino at the change of command ceremony at Fernando Air Base here.

“For the longest time that we’ve known each other, I know what’s in Jeff’s heart. He’s an honourable man, quiet, fulfils his job with dignity, and we can be assured that he will put the interest of the country before his own,” said Aquino.

Aquino noted that the aircraft piloted by Delgado crashed twice in the past because of “engine failure” when he was a Major.

“And he almost died in one, It was a good thing that when the water rose in his plane, he was able to escape and swam until he saw a fisherman whose help he sought. I am really amazed with him. Despite the dangers that he faced as a pilot and as a member of the Air Force, he did not shirk from his responsibility to serve his country,” said Aquino.

Before he was named the 33rd Commanding General of the Air Force, Delgado was the deputy chief of staff for Plans at Camp Aguinaldo.

He is scheduled to retire on March 20, 2016.

‘Programs to continue’

Delgado vowed to continue the programs of his predecessor.

‘I will lay down the direction of my leadership in simple terms. Sinabi ng ating pambansang bayani na ang hindi lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makakarating sa paroroonan. That is why we shall continue the programs already laid out to enhance capability, professionalism and discipline,” he said.

The new Air Force chief said he found it encouraging that they are able to get the “full support” of the national leadership to modernize the AFP.

“The initial delivery starting this year of various advance aircraft, new radars and modern equipment will translate to increased capabilities for air defense, maritime security and national development,” he added.

Aquino said the expected air assets to be added to the inventory include the lead-in fighter trainer jets from Korea. The Philippines is also targeting to buy eight combat utility helicopters, six lose air support aircraft, two long-range patrol aircraft, radar systems and full motion flight simulator.
