Self flagellation is one of the popular practices by the Catholic faithful in the Philippines during Good Friday, along with the crucifixion. It is characterized by the use of a “taktak”, a small wooden paddle with bits of glass or blade that a penitent would whip on his back as part of his atonement for his sins, A “berdugo” or executioner would then pour liquor or rub salt on the penitent’s back to disinfect the self-inflicted wounds. MANILA, Philippines—At least 12 were reported dead while 96 were injured so far during this Holy Week, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Friday.
The 12 fatalities died in eight vehicular accidents in Santiago, Ilocos Sur; Bani, Pangasinan; Sariaya, Quezon; Marogondon, Cavite; Bacoor, Cavite; Libmanan, Camarines Sur; and Gingoog city, Misamis Oriental, the NDRRMC said in its latest update.

Of the 96 injured, 76 were due to vehicular accidents in the said areas.
Meanwhile, at least 20 were injured in an incident of carbon monoxide poisoning in Catbalogan city, Samar, the NDRRMC said.
The NDRRMC also reported one maritime incident in Odiongan, Romblon and three fire incidents in Quezon city, Metro Manila; Gingoog, Misamis Oriental, and Pantar, Lanao Del Norte.
The NDRRMC raised a red alert status from April 16 to 21 in ensuring safety during the Lenten celebration.
