Cardinal Tagle: learn true worship, shun false idols

MANILA, Philippines—After the gates have been opened letting in worshippers to the grandiose, and renovated Manila Cathedral, Manila’s highest priest said that there should be only one “true” worship.

In his homily, Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle said that with the reopening of the Manila Cathedral, Filipinos should never forget who to worship and not give in to “false idols.”

“Today’s readings taught us not to worship those false idols, like the Golden Calf that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to worship,” he said Wednesday evening.

Tagle compared Nebuchadnezzar’s golden idol to money and that how Catholics should never be blinded by the lure of it.

“If you worship money, then all you care about is money, you may not pay employees right just so you can have more,” Tagle said.

“We should learn how to truly worship, and that is to worship God.”

Manila’s Archbishop said that Filipinos should never veer away from the meaning of the reopening of the Manila Cathedral and the forthcoming Holy Week.

“We are celebrating the reconstruction, the retrofitting of the Manila Cathedral, which is not just a building, but a living symbol of community, of faith that have journeyed for centuries,” Tagle said.
