NPA detains Army sergeant as POW

MANILA, Philippines—The New People’s Army rebels in Compostela Valley have seized an Army sergeant after he left his detachment.

In a statement from the National Democratic Front sent to media Monday, the insurgents detained Army Sergeant Jeric Bucio Curay of the 72nd on Friday morning in Barangay (village) Andap, Laak, Compostela Valley.

Curay was driving his motorcycle, from a military detachment in Barangay Panuramin, when members of the NPA under the ComVal-North and Davao-South Agusan Subregional Command stopped and abducted him.

The NPA custodial force “ensures the safety and security” of Curay as the former conducts the investigation regarding the soldier’s alleged involvement against the revolutionary forces.

In the statement, the NPA and the NDF accused the 72nd Infantry Battalion and the 60th IB of protecting the “Big 4” loggers who allegedly denuded the forests of Davao del Norte, Compostela Valley, and Agusan del Sur.

Compostela Valley Governor Arturo Uy is the alleged overseer of the “Big 4” loggers that the insurgents claim.

According to the NPA statement, politicians, active and retired police officers composed the “Big 4.”
