BAGUIO CITY, Philippines—The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is implementing reforms in preparation for the 2016 presidential elections by requiring 9.6 million registered voters to return for new registration and to affix their biometric signatures and data information.
Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes said without the biometrics, voters may not be able to vote for their new leaders.
He said the Comelec has also instituted new programs to ease voting for senior citizens, the disabled, and indigenous Filipinos.
“It’s up to our nine million voters to come and they will not be disenfranchised. The biometrics readings will begin on May 6 and will continue until October 2015,” he added.
