Policy improves garbage disposal in Kamputhaw

THE “no segregation, no collection” policy of the Cebu City government has improved the garbage disposal in barangay Kamputhaw.

Kamputhaw barangay captain Lorenzo Basamot said the first few weeks of the implementation of the program were very difficult as residents showed their objection.

In fact, Basamot said 10 percent of the residents still violated the policy.

The violators were given citation tickets and required to pay a minimum fine of P500. Under the policy, a criminal complaint will be filed in court against the violators if they do not pay the penalty. Because of this, residents have started doing their part.

Those non-violators said the policy gave them knowledge and convenience on the proper disposal of garbage.

“This policy is better because it became easier for us to dispose our garbage,” Delia Besin, 50, a resident said. “This has become our responsibility as residents to follow the policy,” she added.

Basamot said the policy also helped prevent health risks among the residents.

Olga Ruiz, 58, a resident, said the schedule of collection of garbage has made it easier for them to dispose their garbage.

The collecting schedules are Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays for biodegradable wastes and Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for non-biodegradable.  /UP Masscom student Emelliene E. Acosta
