5.9 earthquake rumbles off Chile coast —USGS

WASHINGTON—A moderate 5.9-magnitude earthquake rumbled off Chile’s coast early Wednesday, just 76 miles (123 kilometers) from the capital Santiago, according to US geologists.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries following the earthquake, which took place shortly after 0700 GMT.

The US Geological Survey said the epicenter was 24 miles (39 kilometers) north of the coastal city of Valparaiso. It did not say whether a tsunami had been generated.

Chile has been on edge since a devastating 8.8-magnitude quake last year unleashed a tsunami and killed more than 500 people.
