MANILA, Philippines—Bar exam passer Habeas Corpuz said he never expected that his name would trigger the social media more than those who made it in the top 10.
Corpuz, a full time professor at the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Visayas, teaches Political Science and Social Science subjects.
“I never expected that the social media would react that way about my name,” he said over the phone.
When he was young, he said he wanted to change his name because his classmates were always teasing him.
His father is a soldier. He said at the height of the Edsa people uprising, they kept hearing the term “habeas corpus.”
When he was born, the inevitable happened.
“Tinanong po sya nung nurse kung ano magiging name ng bata sabi nya lang po ‘ah Habeas,” he said.
Corpuz, who dreamed of becoming a lawyer since he was boy, said he burned the midnight oil to unravel the mystery behind his name, and found out that it means “to bring the body before the court.” But he never knew its essence because there was no lawyer in the family.
Corpuz said he was at the library when his friends informed him that he passed the Bar.
