Soldier killed in clash with rebels in Samar

MANILA, Philippines — A soldier was killed in an encounter with communist rebels in Samar on Sunday, the military said.

The clash happened in the villages of Lulugayan and Camarubo-an in Jiabong past 9 a.m., Captain Amado Gutierrez, Army’s 8th Infantry Division spokesperson said on Monday.

Quoting reports from the field, the soldiers hunted down rebels reportedly extorting from the community.

The firefight lasted for 15 minutes.

The identity of the soldier killed in action was withheld pending the notification of his family.

“Troops are currently on pursuit operation against the NPA rebels,” Gutierrez said.
