MANILA, Philippines – Still looking for a job? Why not consider a career in the police service?

Interior Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II called on “young, idealistic and disciplined” college undergraduates and high school graduates, on Wednesday, to join the Philippine National Police (PNP) as civilian employees.

“We need to hire more civilians to increase the number of policemen deployed in the streets to fight criminality,” Roxas said in a statement.

“Tasked to protect a population of more than 92 million, the 150,000-strong PNP still lacks the manpower for the organization to achieve the ideal police ratio,” he added.

He directed the PNP to hasten the recruitment of 7,439 non-uniformed personnel as part of the government’s program to improve police visibility.

They would replace close to 4,500 policemen performing administrative duties in police stations nationwide, he said.

The interior secretary said the new recruits would be assigned as crime registrars and radio operators in the regional and provincial headquarters of the PNP and in police stations.

Roxas said applicants should have finished two years in college or have completed high school “with relevant vocational or trade course that fits the job requirement.”

“Experience or training is preferred, but not a requirement for hiring,” he said.

The Department of Budget Management has also approved the hiring of additional 7,561 civilian employees within the year. They would be deployed to the Highway Patrol Group, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, and the Maritime Group, Roxas said.

The current police to population is 1:700, way below the international standard of 1:500, according to Roxas, citing a report from the PNP.

.

“In some areas, the police to population ratio is one policeman for every 1,000 people,” he said.

Successful applicants would receive as much as P16,051 in monthly salary, P5,000 in yearly clothing allowance, P21,051 in 13th month bonus and other benefits.
