MANILA, Philippines – The mother of Jonas Burgos said the promotion of Brigadier General Eduardo Año to major general does not negate his alleged involvement in her activist son’s disappearance.
“His recommendation for promotion does not change the family’s stance that he was involved in Burgos’ disappearance,” Mrs. Edita Burgos told INQUIRER.net in a phone interview on Wednesday.
The Burgos matriarch made the statement after the Commission on Appointments confirmed the promotion of 18 military officials, including that of Intelligence Service of the Armed of the Philippines (ISAFP) chief Año who has been linked to the disappearance of activist-journalist Jonas Burgos.
Año is among the officials who have been cleared of the criminal charges of arbitrary detention by the Department of Justice.
Burgos, a political activist and son of the late press freedom fighter Jose Burgos, was allegedly abducted in a restaurant at the Ever Gotesco Mall along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City on April 28, 2007.
Mrs. Burgos said although they have no control over the Commission on Appointments, Año’s promotion “does not stop us from praying that justice would be served.”
“We may not be able to prove it yet but in God’s perfect time, we would be able to do so,” she added.
