USPF hands defending champion UC second loss in Cesafi football
DEFENDING champion University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters absorbed its second setback in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. Collegiate Football Championships after losing to the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers, 2-1, yesterday at the Aboitiz Sportsfield in Subangdaku Mandaue City.
Both teams played tight defense in the first half with goals only made in the second half of the match.
USPF’s Rene Sanchez Jr. found the back of the net on a follow through at the 52nd minute of the game. At the 64th minute, Nicho John headed a corner kick for the Panthers’ second goal in the match.
The Webmasters managed to stave off USPF’s lead to one at the 83rd minute courtesy of Jeson Roca.
The win put USPF at third in the standings with 4 points while UC is still at the cellar without a win in the season.
In the second match, the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars finally barged into the win column with a 3-0 routing of the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Booters.
Article continues after this advertisementUSJ-R recovered from their sluggish performance the past few weeks with Harry Bordalba finding a hole in UV’s defense at the 34th minute.
Article continues after this advertisementIn the second half, Rikko De Guzman scored from a penalty kick at the 64th minute while the Jaguars third goal was scored by Agapito Bac-la-an at the 81st minute.
USJ-R is now enjoying second place in the standings with 4 points while UV dropped to fourth place with 3 points.
In the secondary division, the match between Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu and Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) was rescheduled after SHS-AdC asked for a postponement due to a school activity./CORRESPONDENT MARS G. ALISON
