‘Basyang’ strands hundreds in Visayas ports

ILOILO CITY, Philippines—Nearly a thousand passengers remained stranded at ports in Western Visayas Saturday morning due to “Basyang,” according to the Coast Guard.

Commodore Athelo Ybanez, Coast Guard Western Visayas commander, said 895 passengers of roll-on-roll-off vessels and other boats were stranded after most provinces in the region were placed under Storm Signal No.1 and 2.

A Coast Guard report  as of 6 a.m. Saturday said that 492 passengers were stranded at the Caticlan port in Aklan, 146 in Escalante City in Negros Occidental, 126 in Bacolod City, 85 in Dumangas town in Iloilo, 26 in Libertad town in Antique and 20 in Pulupandan town in Negros Occidental.

Trips of ferries between Bacolod and Iloilo cities will remain suspended as long as these areas are under a storm signal.

As of Saturday morning, there were no reports of casualties or reports of flooding in the region.
