MANILA, Philippines—The minority bloc of the House of Representatives thumbed down Wednesday proposals to revive the death penalty in the Philippines.
“All the representatives are in agreement not to revive death penalty,” Minority Floor Leader Ronaldo Zamora, who is also San Juan City representative, said at a press briefing.
1-BAP party-list Rep. Silvestre Bello III added that death penalty failed to curb rising criminality when it was in effect.
The former justice secretary noted that an efficient anti-crime operation by the police is more effective.
Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III filed Senate Bill 2080, which seeks to revive Republic Act 7659 or the Death Penalty law.
Death penalty was abolished under the Arroyo administration in 2006.
