MANILA, Philippines – Five were killed, including a soldier, in a clash between government troops and New People’s Army rebels in Davao Oriental on Wednesday, the military said.
Soldiers were acting on reports of the presence of armed men when they encountered the insurgents at about 8:30 a.m. in Taocanga village in Manay town, said Captain Alberto Caber, spokesperson for the Eastern Mindanao Command said.
Three guerrillas were killed in the skirmish. A wounded rebel died later.
“First aid care was immediately given by the soldiers to the wounded NPA but efforts to save him were futile,” Caber said.
The clash also left one soldier killed and an NPA rebel arrested.
The soldiers also recovered two M16 rifles, one AK47, one M4 rifle, three landmines and a cell phone.
