Thai police: US tourist likely killed by elephants

BANGKOK — Thai police say an American tourist has died after apparently being trampled to death by elephants in a national park.

The U.S. Embassy in Bangkok confirmed the death, but gave no details.

Police Colonel Woradet Suanklaai said Thursday that the woman went missing January 13 in Kaeng Krachan National Park in the western province of Petchaburi.

He said searchers found her battered body in the woods five days later, and it was likely she had been trampled by elephants because of the severe injuries.

Woradet said the woman was traveling alone.

He said police have sent the body to a forensic institute in Bangkok to determine the cause of death.
