Teacher sued for student’s rape at large

ALABEL, Sarangani Province—A math teacher at a national high school in Malapatan town was charged with rape on Thursday by a 17-year-old student.

In her complaint at the provincial prosecutor’s office, the girl said she became pregnant as a result of sexual abuses committed by her teacher, Josue Canillo.

The girl said Canillo abused her thrice since March 3, with two of the assault occurring inside campus.

She said the suspect had threatened her, forcing her to keep mum over the abuses. The girl’s ordeal, her parents said, was only discovered when they found she was already five months pregnant.

Tests made on Sept. 7 confirmed she had been raped.

Canillo was given 10 days to file a counteraffidavit, but he has been in hiding since. Aquiles Z. Zonio, Inquirer Mindanao
