The Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) has mapped out its year-long agenda for the different barangay grassroots sports programs.
CCSC chairman Edward Hayco told Cebu Daily News that during their meeting with the different coaches at the Cebu City Sports Center’s conference room, they discussed the year-long plan of the CCSC in conducting and staging of different sporting events around the city, with emphasis being given to the barangay grassroots sports program.
“The meeting was very productive,” Hayco said. “We discussed about the whole-year plan of the commission. A free barangay grassroots sports program will be initiated starting this April 22 up to May 22. There will be a culmination competition in each sport at their respective venues. The group has also decided that in order to sustain the program, every competition, which will be staged every three months, should be simple enough in every venue.”
Hayco also said they will launch the street game revival program during the summer.
“We will re-introduce takyan to develop eye and feet coordination, the bacol-bacol to develop flexibility, the Japanese garter, biko-biko and tubig-tubig for speed and balance,” Hayco said.
The street games revival, according to him, is a strategy to reintroduce the outdoor games of old to the youth of today. Hayco added they will be implementing street game rules to standardize the indigenous games.
Included in the CCSC’s plan is the construction of another sand court at the Plaza Independencia playgrounds for beach volleyball.
“We are adding another beach volleyball sand court at Fort San Pedro since the sport has become very popular due to the participation of over 220 women players coming from the barangays, public schools and the private sector during the month-long competition recently,” Hayco said earlier.
