The Visayan Electric Company (Veco) has converted tons of wooden crates containing imported electrical cables into school chairs and tables.
Community relations manager Eric Ching saw the pile of scrap wood at the garbage area and came up with the idea of saving these instead of letting them rot or throwing them away.
He thought the scrap wood would be put to better use by turning them into tables and chairs and other furniture pieces, and donate the finished products to schools in line with the power company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) program.
Ching had the scrap wood taken to a furniture shop for treatment before they were made into furniture pieces.
The children of barangay Ermita will be the first to enjoy the furniture since this will be donated to the barangay’s new day care and health center.
Veco may be the first power distribution utility in the country that created furniture out of scrap wood.
