MANILA, Philippines—It was a chilly dawn for the National Capital Region as the temperature dropped to 20.8 degrees Celsius, the coldest temperature for December this year, early Monday  morning, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Aldczar Aurelio of Pagasa said the lowest temperature in Metro Manila for 2013 was 20.7 degrees Celsius last November 9.

On Sunday morning, the temperature in Metro Manila fell to 21.5 degrees Celsius.

Aurelio said both readings were recorded at the Pagasa Science Garden in Quezon City from 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Meanwhile, Baguio City experienced temperatures between 12 to 23 degrees Celsius on Monday morning.

Temperatures in Baguio dropped to 12.6 degrees Celsius on Sunday at 5:00 am.

Aurelio said that the cold spell was the effect of the northeast wind, known locally as “amihan,” which is associated with the Christmas season.

The northeast wind blows to the Philippines from Siberia every mid-October and strengthens in mid-December and peaks from early January to mid-February.
