MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine National Police initiated on Monday the sealing of Metro Manila security guards’ firearm muzzles in a bid to prevent indiscriminate firing during the New Year revelry.
Led by the PNP Supervisory Office for Security and Investigation Agencies, security personnel in Araneta Center, Cubao in Quezon City were the first to tape the gun muzzles a day ahead of New Year’s eve.
Senior Superintendent Dominador Tubon, chief of the PNP SOSIA, said that the PNP’s campaign to curb indiscriminate firing during New Year celebration includes the taping of the firearm muzzles of security
guards assigned in different establishments.
Based on the records of PNP’s security supervisory office, there are about 550,000 security guards across the country.
Tubon said the PNP have also coordinated with regional police directors to implement the directive.
But while the firearms of security guards are sealed, Tubon clarified that when crimes occur while they are on duty, it is legal to use their firearms, as well as for self-defense.
Last week, the PNP urged the public to report cases of indiscriminate firing at the nearest police station in their area and by texting the information at 0917-847-5757.
