Palace warns cops against firing of guns on New Year’s Eve

MANILA, Philippines—Fireworks are the only things to go off this New Year’s Eve.

Malacañang on Sunday afternoon stressed that law enforcers will be sanctioned if they fired their guns in welcoming 2014, the Presidential Communications Operations Office said.

PCOO Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. supported the Philippine National Police drive against firing of guns on New Year’s Eve.

Coloma said that the muzzles of about 148,000 firearms of police personnel have been taped to prevent indiscriminate firing during the holidays.

“After the New Year celebration, the chiefs of police will inspect the firearms and see who violated the rule and will meet appropriate sanctions,” Coloma said in state-run dzRB Radyo ng Bayan.
