Veco turns over 2 public parks for children
Swings, other playground facilities made of recycled materials
The Visayan Electric Co. (Veco) turned over two park projects to Minglanilla town and Naga City in south Cebu last Tuesday.
The Veco park has seesaws, swings, a slide, round tables and an obstacle course, which are made from recycled materials.
Members of the Veco employees’ union converted the old wooden electric poles into seesaws, used tires of Veco service vehicles into swings and obstacle course, two wood spools for wires into round tables and crates into a playhouse with a slide.
These replaced old amenities at the park in the town plaza in front of Minglanilla church.
“We recognize the importance of play to the social development of children as it increases their social competence and emotional maturity,” saidVeco chief operating officer Sebastian Lacson.
“Everything in this park is made from recycled materials. The Veco Park Project strongly promotes our company’s sustainability program,” he said.
The turnover ceremony that was also attended by Veco community relations manager Eric Ching, Veco spokesperson Maria Theresa Sederiosa, Minglanilla Mayor Elanito Peña and Vice Mayor Robert John Selma.
Ching said it was fulfilling on the part of Veco to provide playground facilities for local government units (LGUs) that don’t have their own public playground and for children, especially the less-fortunate ones who can’t afford to go to the malls where use of play facilities require payment of a fee.
During the turnover ceremony in Minglanilla, Veco employees also distributed Samaritan Purse gift boxes containing toys, candies and meal packs to 100 children.
In the afternoon, Veco turned over a children’s playground to the Naga City government. Veco staff also distributed gift boxes and meal packs to 100 children.
Sederiosa said the Veco Park in Naga has more facilities because the playground there is bigger.
Last year, Veco also built a 15 square meter playground in barangay Kansaga, Consolacion town in northern Cebu and a 50 sq.m. park in barangay Kasambagan, Cebu City. /EDITORIAL ASSISTANT TITO P. TAN
