After its initial relief operations to help the survivors of supertyphoon Yolanda, the Aboitiz group, through its social development arm Aboitiz Foundation Inc., is studying the rehabilitation of hundreds of school buildings in various municipalities in northern Cebu that were damaged by the supertyphoon.
The Aboitiz Foundation has earmarked a P140 million funding for school repair. The amount is part of the P200 million budget allocation for the relief and rehabilitation work in Yolanda-damaged areas.
The fund came from the Aboitiz Group’s various business units, donors, friends and donations placed through its UShare payment platform.
Sonny Carpio, Aboitiz Foundation’s executive vice president and chief operating officer, said this is part of the initial rehabilitation plan to help the typhoon survivors get back to normal life.
Carpio said that based on the data provided by the Department of Education, a total of 1,308 school buildings in Bogo City and the towns of Daanbantayan, Medellin and San Remigio in northern Cebu were damaged by the supertyphoon.
The Aboitiz Foundation is currently assessing which schools it could repair.
“We will prioritize those that are heavily damaged,” Carpio said.
The Aboitiz Foundation will also work with the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc., the Aboitiz family’s private foundation, to cover more areas.
Currently, school children in northern Cebu attend classes in roofless school buildings, tents and nipa huts.
