DBM releases P239M for ‘Yolanda’ victims housing assistance

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has released P238.6 million for the Housing Materials Assistance (HOMA) of Supertyphoon “Yolanda” survivors through the National Housing Authority (NHA).

The NHA, under its calamity program, will give P5,000 worth of housing materials to families whose houses were only partially damaged by the typhoon and will not require resettlement. Meanwhile, other beneficiaries in danger zones will be relocated.

“Rehabilitation activities for Yolanda-hit communities are in full swing…We’re facilitating the prompt release of funds that will aid our recovery efforts, especially with respect to providing secure shelter to low-income families and informal settlers who cannot otherwise afford rebuilding their own homes,” DBM Secretary Florencio “Butch” Abad said in a statement Wednesday.

The P238.6 million, sourced from the 2013 budgetary support to government corporations, is part of the P350-million allocation for the NHA’s Emergency Housing Assistance for Calamity Victims Program which responds to the permanent housing needs of poor families and informal settlers affected by calamities.

The remaining amount of P111.4 million will be used to assist families affected by previous calamities such as typhoons Vinta, Santi, Laguyo, Yolanda, Quinta, and Pablo. Victims of other disasters such as fires and earthquakes are also eligible.
