UP seeks help for ‘Yolanda’-affected students

MANILA, Philippines – The University of the Philippines is calling on the public for any kind of assistance as several of its branches have accepted cross-enrolees from UP-Tacloban in the aftermath of Supertyphoon “Yolanda” (international codename: Haiyan).

In an interview over Inquirer Radio 990AM Friday, Dr. J. Prospero De Vera, UP vice president for Public Affairs, said about 400 students from UP-Tacloban were cross enrolled for the second semester in its  Diliman campus, 100 in UP-Iloilo, one in Baguio and 197 in Cebu, among other campuses.

While various UP student organizations have extended financial and material assistance to the typhoon-affected students, the state-run university said it needed more assistance, especially for its Cebu campus which doesn’t have its own housing facility.

He said they were only able to set up makeshift houses for the students, and asked help from people in the area.

“We need to help these students because they lost their homes and families. While in the period of adjustment, it would be bad if we cannot support them during these trying times,” De Vera said.

r the typhoon, UP president Alfredo Pascual issued a memorandum to all UP units to allow students from UP Tacloban to cross-enrol for the second semester even with the absence of registration requirements “in light of the “emergency situation” caused by Yolanda.
