Arcilla cruises to q’finals
THE PHILIPPINES’ top Davis Cup bet Johnny Arcilla inched a step closer towards realizing his dream of winning an eighth championship title in the 32nd Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open tennis championships after advancing into the quarterfinal round recently at the PCA clay courts in Paco, Manila.
The former tennis ball boy in Butuan City displayed another brilliant performance to belie his 33-year-old age as he easily eliminated the unseeded Antonio Sagansay, 6-1, 6-0, to book a quarterfinals battle versus No. 11 seed Kim Saraza.
The seven-time PCA Open champion Arcilla, a Southeast Asian Games men’s singles bronze medallist, is coming off from a stint in the Toyota AEC Championships in Thailand, where he reached the semifinal round before eventually losing.
Saraza, on the other hand, entered the quarterfinals in the P600,000 tournament with a hard-earned 7-6 (5), 6-1 win over Dheo Talatayod. /Correspondent JADE S. VIOLETA
