Azkals midfielder Guirado scores 3 goals for visitors’ 6-2 win over Queen City
Philippine Azkals’ Fil-Spanish midfielder Angel Guirado scored three booming goals yesterday to power the visiting Global Football Club (FC) to a 6-2 bashing of the Cebu Queen City United FC in the 2013 PFF–Smart National Club Championships at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) football pitch.
The injury-plagued CQCU-FC fought to the last minute against the bigger Global FC booters who played a highly physical game.
Global FC midfielder Mark Hartman backed up Guirado by canning two goals while forward Izzeldin Elrahib chipped in a goal.
Despite their easy win, Global FC head coach Brian Reid admitted that they did not expect CQCU-FC to score two goals late in the second half as he expressed his disappointment over his team’s performance.
Global FC led 2-0 in the first half after Elrahib scored at the 10th minute followed by Hartman’s 45th minute goal.
Guirado extended their lead to 3-0, after scoring a goal in the 65th minute of the second half.
CQCU-FC’s forward Dan Villarico stunned the defense of Global FC with a goal in the 76th minute. But Guirado scored in the very same minute to stretch their lead to 5-1.
CQCU-FC’s midfielder Joseph Rodriguez found the back of the net in the 82nd minute to chip their deficit to 2-5 but Guirado again converted a short kick from the left wing in the 91st minute for the final count.
According to Reid, they could have performed better if his two ace players Carlo De Murga and Ruffo Sanchez were able to play. The two reportedly went back to Spain.
“It was a stand-off because both teams won’t let their guards down. We did not expect them to score two goals in the second half that’s why I’m upset when our defense relaxed,” Reid said.
“I would also like to thank the Cebuano fans who still cheered for us even though this is not our home court,” he added.
Global FC was initially disqualified to play in the tournament but got the chance to compete after the PFF revised its earlier decision to ban the squad.
