MANILA, Philippines-Dr. Maria Paz Mendoza Guanzon, born on May 10, 1884, in Pandacan, Manila, was the first Filipino woman to acquire a high-school diploma in 1905. She was also the first woman to receive a medical degree from the University of the Philippines in 1912. She was also the first Filipino doctor to conduct an extensive research on “bangungot.” The first woman to become a member of the UP Board of Regents, Guanzon died of a heart attack on March 10, 1967.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
