MANILA, Philippines—The city of Manila is to donate a total of P16 million to Tacloban City and two other towns in Leyte and Eastern Samar that were badly hit by Supertyphoon “Yolanda” (Haiyan).

In separate resolutions, the City Council  authorized Mayor Joseph Estrada to make the following donations in the name of the city government:  P10 million for Tacloban City in Leyte; P5 million for the municipality of Javier in Leyte; and P1 million for the municipality of Guiuan in Eastern Samar.

Yolanda’s strength “caught us all by surprise that a day (and) after the storm’s fury, many communities (were) virtually leveled with unimaginable destruction and loss of lives and property,” the resolution said.

It added that, as the nation’s capital, the City of Manila must adopt the devastated communities as recipient of aid so that they may provide for themselves until they can rise again.
