Kidney patient in need of aid

Reyna Encarnado

For the past 11 years, Reyna Encarnado has been undergoing hemodialysis for kidney failure.

Only 37 years old, the delicate condition of the former fast-food crew member has left her weak and bed-bound. Her thrice weekly dialysis sessions have made it more practical for her to stay in a ward at East Avenue Medical Center in Quezon City, with her 71-year-old mother looking after her.

Despite her poor health, Reyna has a dream. “If I’ll be able to walk again, I want to pursue an advocacy. I’ll go to schools to tell elementary students to drink plenty of water,” she said, adding that her doctors had told her that one of the causes for her illness was her lack of water intake.

She recalled that there was a time when all she ate in a day was fast food and soft drinks.

Having asked for and received help from so many foundations and charitable groups, Reyna said she was grateful for all the aid she has been given.

Her condition, however, makes it necessary for her to go on asking for assistance because she needs more than P6,000 a week for her thrice a week dialysis sessions.

“I am also looking for a wheelchair so that I can go home to my teenage son in San Juan. It’s difficult for him to be alone,” she said.
