MANILA, Philippines—The Quezon City government plans to donate P50 million to the survivors of super typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan) in Eastern Visayas.

Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte said the assistance would come from the city’s Quick Response Fund, and would be used to support relief and recovery operations in stricken areas.

The city council passed a measure spelling out the guidelines for the release and use of the money.

Earlier, Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista asked the city council to consider using the fund for the typhoon victims.

The P50-million assistance will be coursed through the local disaster risk reduction and management offices of the affected areas.

Belmonte said the P50-million donation would be separate from the assistance that Quezon City is to set aside for the three Leyte municipalities it has “adopted”— Palompon, Tolosa and Santa Fe.

A seven-member team consisting of representatives from the Department of Public Order and Safety, the Quezon City Police District, the engineering, health and social services departments, left on Sunday to assess the situation in the three towns.

Public order and safety chief Elmo San Diego said assessment was being made to determine the priority needs of the affected communities. The assessment will include the damage caused by the typhoon, the integrity of structures, the residents’ health, and the social and psychological repercussions.

The assessment team was expected to return to Metro Manila on Tuesday.
