MANILA, Philippines—Education Secretary Armin Luistro has ordered all public schools to accept “emergency transferees” from areas devastated by Supertyphoon “Yolanda” following reports some private schools were requiring affected students to present their school records.
The Department of Education (DepEd) will issue the official directive on Monday, Luistro said.
“This directive is necessary because we want students from affected areas who suddenly relocated to Cebu, Metro Manila and other places to be able to continue their education with minimal disruption,” said the secretary in a statement.
“Normally, transferees would have to present their school records, but in this case I have directed the public schools to accept them immediately. We can sort out their records later when school operations in Eastern Visayas and other affected areas have normalized,” he said.
The DepEd also urged private schools to “give special consideration” to the “emergency transferees.”
“We are requesting the private schools to do the same and provide us with a list of the transferees so the DepEd could help facilitate the transfers,” Luistro said.
The names of the transferees should be submitted by the school division superintendents to the DepEd central office for tracking, he said. With a report from Kristine Felisse Mangunay
