Cebu, Bohol, Albay suspend classes as supertyphoon nears

MANILA, Philippines – Authorities on Wednesday suspended classes in provinces expected to be hit by supertyphoon “Haiyan” as it inches closer to the country.

At least three provinces – Cebu, Bohol and Albay – have announced the suspension of classes in all levels starting Thursday after the state weather bureau said Haiyan will affect the Visayas and parts of Luzon and Mindanao.

Haiyan will be named “Yolanda” once it enters the Philippine area of responsibility.

The Cebu Provincial Government announced on social media that classes in all levels (including tertiary) have been suspended for Thursday and Friday.

“Cebu Governor Hilario P. Davide has declared ‘No classes in all levels in public and private schools’ (Elementary and High School) in the entire province of #Cebu on November 7 and 8, 2013,” the post said.

It has been later announced that the Commission on Higher Education also ordered the cancelation of classes in colleges and universities in the province.

“Yes, as #YolandaPh precautionary measure,” the local government unit (LGU) replied to queries on why classes were suspended.

The LGU also posted images of Cebu’s landslide and flood susceptibility map from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau.

Meanwhile, the Department of Education over Twitter said, “ALBAY | #walangpasok Classes in ALL LEVELS are suspended starting tomorrow, November 7, 2013.”

In a later post, the agency said Bohol has also canceled public and private school classes in all levels from November 7 to 8.

Work in government offices were also suspended in Albay, according to the latest Albay Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council advisory. However, government employees under the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Philippine National Police, the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the Department of Health and the Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital will still report for work.
