The Challenge tees off at Alta Vista today

THE 9th Alta Vista Golf and Country Club Junior Golf Challenge tees off Tuesday at the club’s course carved on the hills of Pardo, Cebu City.

For this event, the short, but tricky layout has been shortened to par-70 as the normally par-5 9th and 18th holes will be played as par-4 for the three-day event.

Set to see action starting today would be players from Class A (15 to 17 years old), class B (13-14), and the Special Division (18 to 21 years old).

Players under class C (11-12 years old), class D (9-10) and class E (6-8) will see action starting Wednesday. The tournament is a project of the club’s Jungolf Committee headed by Victor Gocela.

Some 80 participants from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao have enlisted this year. Players are not only classified by age, but also by gender.

Prizes at stake will be specially-made trophies and medals for the top age category winners and the skills game challenge – putting, bunker shot, and pitching.

There will also be a team event as well as the battle for the club of the year.

Corresponding points will be awarded to players based on their standing in their age group to determine the club champion.

The awards ceremony for the event presented by Alta Vista Golf and Country Club and backed by Restoserve Marketing Corp., General Milling Corp., GT Industrial Development Inc., Lim Tong Press, J Poon, and Aspac Global Commodities, will be held on Oct. 31 at the club’s ballroom.

Entry fee for the tournament is P2,000 for Special Division to class D and P1,500 for class E. Each participant will get a specially-made cap as giveaway.

Players under SD and classes A and B will be playing three rounds while those from classes C and D will play two 18-hole rounds. Class E players will play only two 9-hole rounds. /PR with Correspondent Lou Coloyan
