More than 140 families were left homeless after a nearly four-hour blaze engulfed a cluster of shanties in Malabon City yesterday morning.

The fire ravaged the houses made of light materials at 29 Avha Interior, Arasity St. in Barangay (village) Tinajeros, according to the Malabon Fire Department.

It was reported at 9 a.m. and reached the fifth alarm in just an hour after it spread quickly among the shanties in the area. It took about an hour before firefighters declared it under control.

The fire was finally put out around 12:45 p.m. but not before it destroyed around 100 houses, leaving 140 families homeless. No one was injured or hurt in the incident.

Initial investigation showed that the blaze started at the second floor of the Silvan family’s house. The cause has yet to be determined while total damage to property was estimated at around P600,000.
