MANILA, Philippines – President Benigno Aquino III’s net satisfaction rating dropped by 15 points in September based on a recent survey by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) at the height of the Zamboanga siege and “pork barrel” controversy.
The SWS survey conducted among 1, 200 respondents from September 20 to 23 showed that from a “very good” rating of +64 in June, Aquino’s net satisfaction rating fell to “good” at +49.
The poll had sampling error margins of ±3% for national and ±6% for area percentages.
Based on the survey, Aquino’s net satisfaction rating dropped in all areas and in all socio-economic groups though it was still within or above the range of “good.”

SWS classifies net satisfaction ratings as follows: +70 and above, “excellent”; +50 to +69, “very good”; +30 to +49, “good”; +10 to +29, “moderate”, +9 to -9, “neutral”; -10 to -29, “poor”; -30 to -49, “bad”; -50 to -69, “very bad”; -70 and below, “execrable.”
Most notable was the 26-point drop in Visayas from an “excellent” +74 in June to a “good” +48 in September. The President’s rating also fell 8 points to +38 in the National Capital Region and 15 points to +52 for the rest of Luzon. Mindanao was at +52, registering a 6-point drop.
During the 2010 presidential elections, Aquino led in many areas of Visayas, especially Cebu, as he competed with former president and now Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada in certain provinces of Luzon and Mindanao.
Cebu Daily News in May 2010 reported that Aquino garnered close to a million votes in Cebu. Commission on Elections data show that Cebu province has the largest number of people (1.8 million) who voted in the 2010 elections. Visayas accounted for more than eight million voters in 2010 or 21 percent of the total voters.
In rural areas, Aquino’s net rating dipped 18 points from an “excellent” +70 in June to a “very good” +52 in September. On the other hand, his rating in urban areas went down to +47 from +57 during the last survey.
Aquino’s net rating among class E respondents recorded a substantial 29-point drop to a “good” +39 as net ratings of class A, B and C fell to a “very good” +55 from an “excellent” +75 in June. The President’s rating among the class D remained “very good” at +52, a drop by 10 points compared to last month.
