MEXICO CITY — A Roman Catholic priest is recovering from wounds suffered when he was attacked by a man with a machete.

Prosecutors in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz say Rev. Tomas Alonso Martinez was officiating Mass in the town of Ciudad Isla when an attacker began hacking at him with a machete. The priest suffered non-life-threatening wounds to his arm.

The attacker was arrested. The motive remains under investigation.

Local media reported the attacker claimed to be the antichrist.
