Comelec asks voters: yes or no to creation of Davao Occidental
MANILA, Philippines – In a statement released Thursday, the Comelec said it will simultaneously hold the barangay elections and the plebiscite in Davao del Sur.
Comelec said registered voters of Davao del Sur will participate in the plebiscite using a special ballot.
As of May 2013, Davao del Sur, excluding Davao City, has 523,862 registered voters.
In August, the Philippine Daily Inquirer said it was Davao del Sur 2nd district Representative Franklin Bautista who vigorously pushed for the “division of the province” and that local politicians see it as “the end of bitter political warfare” between the Bautista and the Cagas clans.
