Cebuano Sevillano rules Shell Nat’l Active Chess
UNIVERSITY of San Carlos’ Rhenzi Kyle Sevillano emerged the best junior wood pusher in the Shell National Youth Active Chess Championships at the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City over the weekend.
Sevillano, who once dominated the kiddies division in the national championships in 2012, again showcased his brilliance in the sport after edging some of the best regional champions of the prestigious annual chess tournament by finishing with 7.5 points.
Jan Nigel Galan bagged 7.0 points while Timothy John So Kua finished with 6.5 to finish second and third, respectively. Jerome Villanueva finished fourth (6.5) because of a smaller tie break score while Visayas Leg champion Felix Shaun Balbona claimed fifth place with 4.5 points.
Southern Luzon’s Jean Karen Enriquez topped the distaff side with a total of 7.0 points.
Second and third placers were Ella Grace Moullic (6.0) and Arvie Lozano (6.0).
Cebu’s Chris Aldritz Pondoyo and Jeffu Dorog placed sixth and 10th places in the kiddies boys division that was dominated by Luzon’s Dale Bernardo (8.5).
