UC smashers take lead in Cesafi badminton tilt

TERTIARY smashers of the University of Cebu (UC) waxed hot yesterday in the Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation Inc (Cesafi) badminton competition  at the MetroSports badminton courts.

The Webmasters clinched the top spots in the women’s doubles, women’s singles A and B divisions then placed second in the men’s doubles to emerge the hottest team in the tertiary competition.

UC’s Jeralyn Taboada defeated Jennilyn Li of University of San Carlos (USC), 21-11,21-16, and the University of San Jose Recoletos’ (USJ-R) Agatha Amante, 25-23,21-7, to dominate division A.

Julie Malazarte joined Taboada in the spotlight after dominating the women’s B division. She first nipped Eloiza Maquilan of USJ-R, 21-09, 21-08 and escaped Yerha Silawan of USC, 21-17, 15-21, 21-18, to clinch the top spot.

FEATURED STORIES

The lethal tandem of Irish Ares and Jessa Mae Lagat of UC emerged the toughest team in the women’s doubles competition. They first edged USC’s Kim Torres and Marie Alterado, 21-6, 21-16, then beat USJ-R’s Mia Lyn Rizon and Rosen Sia, 21-10, 21-10.

USJ-R’s Jeffrey Lipaopao and Peter Paul Tan captured the crown in the men’s doubles competition followed by UC’s Dexter Opalla and Aljun Penote.

Action in the secondary division gets underway today as the remaining events in the men’s tertiary continue.
