MANILA, Philippines- Vice President Jejomar Binay is due to arrive in Zamboanga City Saturday afternoon to meet with President Aquino on the supposed plan for a peaceful settlement of the conflict between government and the Moro National Liberation Front, his office said.
Binay’s spokesperson Joey Salgado said Binay left Manila for Zamboanga Saturday morning for an urgent meeting with officials on the ground.
The Vice President had announced late Friday night that MNLF founding Chair Nur Misuari and Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin have agreed to observe a ceasefire to pave the way for talks towards a “peaceful settlement.”
It was apparent, however, that gunfights continued up to Saturday, with the military saying no ceasefire took effect.
