USJR spikers retain clean record after beating UV
THE University of San Jose-Recoletos Spiking Jaguars remain unbeaten in the 2013 Cesafi men’s volleyball tournament after they scraped past the gritty University of Cebu Webmasters last Wednesday night at the Aznar Coliseum.
Determined to gain back the throne that they held for many years, the last one in 2010 at the tail-end of a rare “three-peat,” the wards of renowned head coach Grace Antigua bucked a second set loss to beat the Webmasters in four sets, 25-22, 22-25, 25-6, 25-17.
The win gave USJ-R the solo lead in the standings after sharing it with idle University of Southern Philippines Foundation for a while. The Spiking Jaguars are also two wins away from completing a sweep of the elimination round.
UC dropped to 2-3 after the loss.
Meanwhile, in the evening’s other game, defending champions University of San Carlos evened its record at 2-2 after thrashing the hapless Cebu Doctor’s University in straight sets.
USC was so dominant that it never allowed CDU to reach double-figure points in each set in winning, 25-4, 25-6, 25-9. CDU fell to 0-4. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
