QC dad seeks additional 5% discount for seniors

A Quezon City councilor has pushed for the approval of an ordinance that will give a five-percent special discount to elderly residents for senior care products they purchase.

Councilor Allan Benedict Reyes of the third district stressed in his proposal the vital role of senior citizens in nation-building and community development because of their experience and sharing of expertise.

Apart from the 20-percent discount and value-added tax exemption they already enjoy under the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010, elderly residents of the city should also be entitled to a five-percent special discount on products vital to their care, he said.

The special discount will apply to adult diapers, pads, products for personal hygiene, laxatives and enemas, walkers and canes, wheelchairs, supports and restraints such as arm sling pouches and elbow braces, as well as skin care and products used in dressing wounds.

Under the proposed ordinance, “every senior citizen shall enjoy a special discount of five percent of the retail price of senior care products” provided that the total purchase price does not exceed P1,000 weekly and the items are for the elderly resident’s personal and exclusive use.

Violators will face fines ranging from P1,000 to P5,000 on top of the revocation of their business permits.
