Did you know: Gerry de Leon’s 100th birth anniversary
Today, Sept. 12, is the of the late filmmaker and National Artist for Film Gerry de Leon. Born in 1913 in Sampaloc, Manila, he was part of the famous Ilagan clan of film and stage. His first directorial job was the critically acclaimed “Ama’t Anak” in which he directed himself and his brother Tito Arevalo. A doctor by profession, he was elevated to the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (Famas) Hall of Fame for having more than five awards in the best director category. De Leon died on July 25, 1981, and was conferred the National Artist Award posthumously on June 12, 1982.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
