DPWH prods architects to build ‘safe, strong’ structures
MANILA, Philippines – “Not only structurally safe but strong.”
This was the reminder by Public Works and Highways Secretary Rogelio Singson to members of the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) during its 37th Annual Convention in April.
In a statement released by the Office of the Secretary Tuesday, Singson said that after witnessing the massive destruction brought by earthquakes in Haiti, New Zealand, Japan, Myanmar, and in some parts of the country, “we should be more socially aware of disaster preparedness.”
He said that it was the “responsibility [of architects] to put premium on the safety and well-being of those who shall occupy properties for lifetime.”
He challenged the organization to “participate actively in the review and formulation of the amended implementing rules and regulations of the building code . . . since some designs and standards 20 years ago were now obsolete.”
At the same time, Singson acknowledged the “contribution of the UAP in implementing the national building code and its awareness of the various geological hazards in the country.”
