DZIQ: There’s no reason for sugar price increase—Agriculture chief

There is no reason to increase sugar prices now as there is enough supply to last for months, Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala told Radyo Inquirer in an interview Wednesday.

MANILA, Philippines – There is no reason to increase sugar prices now as there is enough supply to last for months, Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala told Radyo Inquirer in an interview Wednesday.

Alcala issued the statement in response to a move by a group of bakers
to raise prices of their products starting next Monday, citing the increase in the price of sugar, a main ingredient in making bread.

But Alcala said that the Agriculture department has no power to arrest any businessman trying to take advantage of this situation.
