THE VOLLEYBELLES of the previously unheralded Cebu Doctor’s University (CDU) registered the upset of the tournament as they shocked title contenders University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Lady Jaguars in four sets in the Cesafi women’s volleyball tournament Thursday night at the University of San Carlos gym.
In previous seasons, CDU barely registered a blip on the radar. But with the aggressive recruitment of head coach Fr. Rolando T. Manayon, mainly from his high school team, the Pajo National High School Vipers, CDU is steadily becoming a force that shall be reckoned with.
After falling short against the league-leading Southwestern University (SWU) earlier this week, CDU logged its most impressive win to date as it swung the upset axe on the necks of the former champion USJ-R, 25-18, 20-25, 25-20, 25-15.
Led by veteran spiker Athena Sucalit, CDU improved its standing to 1-1 (win-loss) while dropping the ladies of legendary head coach Grace Antigua to 2-2.
In the girls’ division, SWU debuted successfully as it notched a 25-22, 25-18 win over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), which dropped to an even 1-1.
In other results, the Cebu Institute of Technology-University beat CDU, 25-9, 23-25, 25-12, 25-16, for their first win this season in the men’s division. In the boys’ class, the University of San Carlos defeated SWU, 25-14, 25-20, to barge into the win column. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
